  • Dries to a satin finish

Cons:

  • Can’t be applied to plastics that have been previously painted
  • Takes more than 2 hours to dry

I tried to find a spray paint for plastic that can keep its color for a long time, but all of the products I tried seemed to wear away. I tried to apply it to a plastic car as a backseat cover, but after a week the paint started to wear away. I tried multiple times to reapply a second coat for more durability, but that just ended up making the plastic feel rough and sticky. On the bright side, the color had a really good texture. Other than that, I wasn¡€’t impressed. I would maybe recommend it for plastic that doesn’t get a lot of traffic, but for a car backseat cover, it wasn¡•t all that great.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the best spray paint for plastic?

If you're hoping to restore some shine to your dull plastic pieces or get a piece of plastic to rust, here are 10 of our favorites.

Keep in mind that these are not foolproof and each plastic piece will react a little differently depending on your expectations.

To restore glossiness, plastic needs to be clean, free of grease, and the spray paint needs to have a high-gloss finish.

Rust happens when a metal is exposed to water or air. Plastic loves moisture, so I was surprised to see that I couldn't get plastic to rust with these spray paints.

However, plastic does rust to a black color when exposed to salt water, so spray on a small piece of plastic first and wait to see what happens.

Keep in mind that if your plastic is covered in rust, you will need to sand it off first before you paint.

How do you permanently paint plastic?

Is it safe?

The answer is based upon the type of plastic you are painting.

A polymer is an organic, or carbon based material that is generally considered synthetic. They're created with long-chain molecules that contain carbon and hydrogen. As a result of the long chains, polymers are very flexible. Polymer materials can be described as semi-stable and are often vulnerable to degradation.

The problem with degradation is that materials prone to lower stability can become damaged over time. When this happens, your material can look different or have properties that it didn't before. This is why paint fumes can be so harmful to your health. Even in the case of recycled plastic, the paint may release harmful fumes as the plastic's structure degrades.

When considering paint fumes, it is important to understand that not all plastics are the same. It also means that the requirements for safely painting certain plastics will be different based upon the plastic's chemical properties.

How do you get spray paint to stick to plastic?

In the best case scenario, you would be applying the paint to a freshly washed surface. If that is not possible, spray a primer/sealer (like PlastiDip) to the plastic first. This is a cheaper alternative than painting one layer of primer/sealer over your paint job.

Alternatively, you can also use heavy tack sandpaper. Wet the surface of the plastic and sand into the plastic with the coarse side of the sanding paper. Once the plastic is thoroughly sanded, it will be ready for spray paint.

I typically use both methods and they are interchangeable for my purposes.

Can you use regular spray paint on plastic models?

Over the years, I've used many different brands of spray paint on plastic models. I've had pretty good and bad experiences with almost all of them. However, the following are my preferred options.

Sadly, some spray paints on the market have a negative effect on plastic, causing it to degrade. There's even a spray paint ad that refers to it. However, there are some spray paints that can be used on plastic and offer a perfectly fine result.

Conclusion

This page is all about how to paint plastic, but it doesn't just contain information on how to do it. With so much junk plastic out there in the world, we looked to see if there were spray paints out there that would do the job without a lot of negative impact on the environment. This guide will walk you through the best spray paints for plastic and give you a sense of what impact each spray paint might have on the world.
